1984: Book Review

1984 by George Orwell is a dystopian novel that highlights what a totalitarian regime could do to a person's freedom and psychological well-being. It describes the journey of Winston Smith who tries to rebel against the all-powerful party which rules the superstate of "Oceania" under the enigmatic leader "Big Brother". The novel creates psychological fear and raises important questions about class-dynamics in society, the freedom of an individual and its correlation to the power exercised by the state, war and its social dynamics and psychological aspects, and what totalitarian regimes are capable of and the extent to which it can erase a individual and his personality through coercive powers. A must-read.
